12 Year Anniversary Gift: Silk, Linen and Where the Tradition Comes From
The traditional 12 year anniversary gift is silk or linen, and many lists name both; modern American lists add pearls. That answer is less settled than the lists suggest, and the history is worth a look before you choose. Below you will find what today's lists say, where the silk and linen tradition comes from, gift ideas in silk for him, for her and for the two of you, and how to check that a silk gift is really silk.
What is the 12th anniversary gift?
Most lists agree on silk; whether linen sits alongside it depends on the list. Here is what the best-known ones say for the twelfth year:
| List | Traditional | Modern |
|---|---|---|
| The Knot | Silk and linen | Pearls |
| Brides | Silk or linen | Pearls |
| Hallmark | Silk or linen | Pearls |
| Chicago Public Library (2000) | Silk | Pearls, coloured gems |
| Debrett's (UK, 2012) | Silk, linen | None given |
| Pears Cyclopaedia (UK, 1978/79 edition, via Wikipedia) | Silk and fine linen | None given |
So if you want one word, silk is the safe answer for a 12th wedding anniversary gift; linen is the traditional alternative, and pearls are the modern one on American lists.
Where the silk and linen tradition comes from
The lists go back at least to the 1890s. An American etiquette book from 1896 already names the twelfth anniversary the “Silk and Linen Wedding”, and a letter-writing manual from 1900 calls it “the silk and fine linen wedding”. The same 1896 book adds that only a handful of anniversaries, the paper, wooden, tin, crystal, silver and golden weddings, were the favourites; the others were rare.
The early lists did not agree. According to TIME, a reference book from 1910 gives linen alone for the twelfth year. An etiquette book first published in 1913 suggests a china wedding for the twelfth, and one from 1921 calls the twelfth the leather wedding and puts silk at the forty-fifth. Emily Post's Etiquette of 1922 lists eight anniversaries, and the twelfth is not among them.
American jewellers discussed a fuller list at a meeting in 1922 and worked on one over the following years. A list published by their association in 1937 is cited by several guides as the basis of today's year-by-year lists, but we found no copy of it. We also found no source that says when pearls became the modern gift for the twelfth year. What is clear is where the lists have ended up: silk, linen or both as the traditional gift, and, in the American lists, pearls as the modern one.
What silk and linen stand for
The old etiquette books name the silk and linen wedding without giving a reason. The meanings you read today come from gift guides, and they differ. The Knot describes silk and fine linen as natural fabrics that represent the warmth and security of a lasting marriage. Its list of milestone gifts calls them “home decor staples” that nod to the life you have built together. The magazine Brides speaks of objects of opulence and luxury. Take whichever reading suits the two of you, or none; the tradition itself does not fix one.
Silk anniversary gift ideas
The ideas below are grouped by who they are for; they are not ranked. Any of them works for anyone.
For the two of you
A gift for both of you can go in the bedroom: silk pillowcases for both pillows, or silk bedding more generally. A matching pair of pillowcases is a simple way to mark the silk year together.
12 year anniversary gift for him
- A silk tie or pocket square
- A silk robe or pyjamas
- A silk pillowcase of his own
12 year anniversary gift for her
- A silk scarf
- A silk robe or pyjamas
- Silk scrunchies or a silk bonnet
- A silk pillowcase
If you choose linen
Linen works for the same year: sheets or bedding, a tablecloth or napkins, or a shirt, all in linen. We do not make linen, so for linen gifts look to a specialist.
How to tell real silk before you buy a silk gift
A silk gift should be silk, and the label is where you check. Why silk is a natural fibre and its imitations are not is explained in our guide is silk natural or synthetic. In the EU, the fibre composition has to be visible before you buy, including online, and only the legal fibre names may appear in it. A few points help:
- Fibre composition. “100% silk” means silk fibre. Words such as “silky” or “satin” are not fibre statements; satin is a weave, as our guide to silk vs satin explains.
- Imitations. Viscose and acetate were made to look like silk and have long been sold under the name artificial silk; polyester satin looks similar too.
- Mulberry silk. If a gift is sold as mulberry silk, the label still names the fibre as silk; “mulberry” is the seller's addition.
- Weight. The figure in momme describes how heavy a silk fabric is for its area; it helps you compare, but it is not proof of the fibre.
- Care. Check the care label before you buy, so the gift suits the recipient's laundry routine; our guide on how to wash silk covers the rest.
Pearls, the modern 12th anniversary gift
Current American lists give pearls as the modern gift for the twelfth year: The Knot, Brides and Hallmark all do. An older list, from the Chicago Public Library in 2000, adds coloured gems. The Knot and Brides also name jade as the year's gemstone. If the traditional gift feels too practical, pearls are the usual modern alternative.
Silk gifts from RENESSY
Three RENESSY silk products fit the silk year. The pillowcases in our silk pillowcase collection are 100% organic mulberry silk, 22 momme, Grade 6A, with silk on both faces, not a silk front on a cotton or polyester back. The silk is GOTS certified. The pillowcases carry the OEKO-TEX MADE IN GREEN label, and the label ID M27MNB1V9 can be checked on the OEKO-TEX website. The pillowcases carry the Dermatest 5-Star seal and the Dermatest Sensitive Skin seal, dermatologically tested for sensitive skin. Our silk bonnet is made of 22 momme Grade 6A organic mulberry silk on both of its layers, and its closure is an adjustable buckle band over an elastic woven edge; what to look for in a bonnet is set out in our guide to the best silk bonnet for sleeping. Our 10 mm silk scrunchies are made of 100% organic mulberry silk at 22 momme and Grade 6A, the same silk as our pillowcases. The silk of the bonnet and the scrunchies is GOTS certified too, and both carry the OEKO-TEX MADE IN GREEN label.
Frequently asked questions
What is the traditional 12th anniversary gift?
Silk or linen. Current lists such as The Knot, Brides and Hallmark name both, while the Chicago Public Library list gives silk alone and puts linen at the fourth year.
Is the 12th anniversary silk or linen?
Either, and many lists say both. An etiquette book from 1896 and a letter-writing manual from 1900 already call the twelfth the silk and linen wedding, while, according to TIME, a reference book from 1910 gives linen alone.
What is the modern 12th anniversary gift?
Pearls, according to modern American lists; the Chicago Public Library list from 2000 adds coloured gems.
What does silk mean for a 12th anniversary?
We found no fixed meaning. The old books give the name without a reason, and today's gift guides offer different readings, from the warmth and security of a lasting marriage to opulence and luxury.
What is a good 12th wedding anniversary gift for him?
Something in silk that he will use: a silk tie or pocket square, a silk robe or pyjamas, or a silk pillowcase. If you prefer the modern gift, pearls work too, for example as cufflinks.
